I love the cosy feeling of the run up to Christmas, when the nights have drawn in and the fire goes on and when we reach December the 1st my Christmas decs can go up! For many people though dressing the house for Christmas can feel a little overwhelming and don’t know where to start, so let’s discuss some top tips.

Choose your colours
You might not be aware, but each year Christmas decor can be placed into different schemes. Usually there are 4-6 predominant schemes established by home decor trends and adopted by designers and stylists creating Christmas decorations, cards and crackers. These schemes are created following trend analysis of fashion and home interiors, so you can rest easy in the knowledge that your décor is on point. So, my first top tip is to pick a scheme.

2022 trends
Christmas Classic
Traditional Christmas colours including deep reds, greens, creams and golds.
Fresh Classic
A twist on classic using bright reds, lime greens, white and silvers. Great for kids.
Timeless Luxury
Elegant golds and blacks
Forest
Natural earthy colours with mixed texture and cute animals, think flora and fauna.
Romance
Soft pinks, pearls, whites and silver. Sparkle and shine!
Frosted winter
Pale blues, deep blues, deep greens, white, pearls and silver.

Once you have selected your scheme, work with it throughout the home for a cohesive festive feel. Dress your tree, the mantle, windows, consoles and sideboards. Use your Christmas decorations alongside some fresh foliage for an opulent feel.
(Top tip – make the most of the January sales to replace any breakages or top up your Christmas decs for next year).

Let there be light and lots of it!
In my opinion there’s nothing quite like the warm glow of candles and Christmas lights in a cosy living room, it evokes strong childhood memories of feeling so content.

It has never been easier to light your home with the soft glow of candles and beautiful lights. There is such a vast array of lights and candles on the market the biggest problem is choosing what to buy.

I would recommend using battery powered candles as they are safe and give a soft flickering glow. They can be placed among foliage, on the fireplace, shelving and in lanterns with no worry of them being dangerous. Aim to vary the size of candle to add height and interest.

LED string lights are a great choice and available in a vast choice of colours and styles. Depending on your colour scheme you can go full colour or whites. Alongside your tree, lights look great well placed on a mantel piece, sideboard and window ledges. Try to nestle them into some soft foliage or in among your baubles and Christmas ornaments rather than just laid bare.
(Top tip – to save having to untangle strings of lights next year, wrap lights around a piece of cardboard before putting away)

Cosy up
Now you have chosen the colours, lit the candles and turned the twinkly lights on it’s time to bring out the cosy throws and pillows.
Mix up the textures, throw in some fake furs, wools and fleeces. A mixture of textures makes the room feel more interesting and extra cosy to snuggle down in. Drape throws over the sofas ready just to grab and wrap up in. Use lots of pillows and cushions in your chosen colours to soften the room and sink in to.
(Top tip – when the festive season is over and you are packing everything away, use a vacuum storage bag for your throws and cushions. Seal with a festive scented candle so that when you open the following year you are greeted with the lovely Christmas scent.)

Door Decs
Sparkle and shine it’s Christmas time!! Welcome your guests and stand out from the crowd with an amazing doorway/entrance. Depending on the space available you could really go to town and dress yours with a tree either side, lights around your door and a wreath. Again, lights and candles are key for a twinkly, stand out door way. It would work well to tie in your colour scheme to your chosen indoor colours. For the extra little bit of magic sprinkle a touch of snow.
To add an extra special touch, how about placing a wooden sledge and a pair of ice skating boots. Use your imagination here have fun… it’s the festive season after all!

Christmas wreath making workshops are a wonderful way to design and make your very own door dec, they are usually great fun too a chance to catch up with friends and enjoy a festive tiple.

Do you remember the pure joy and excitement of being a child and waiting for Father Christmas…why not add to the magic for your children by leaving a little note for the man himself or his elves and sprinkle some oats for the reindeer at the door.
There you have it a quick little round up of some of my festive tips. Have fun decorating your home and enjoy the festive moments but my top tip for the festive season is ‘eat, drink and be merry!’ from the comfort of your beautiful, cosy, twinkly lounge!
