Ideal plants and flowers to plant in January

A lot of people are hesitant to plant in January, as it’s not always the easiest time to tackle the garden.

However, the payoff is worth it. When planting in January, you will need to use new compost and sow seeds as close to the surface as possible. This will give you the best chance of success. It’s also important to choose plants and flowers that are suitable to plant in January, as not all are and some will fail to thrive.

What Should You Be Planting in January?

If you’re looking to start 2019 off with some planting, you won’t be short of plants and flowers to choose from. Though not all plants and flowers are suitable for January planting, a large number are, four of which are listed below:

Pelargoniums - Pelargoniums flower between June and October, which means that you will certainly get a great deal of time to enjoy your hard work. Pelargoniums are a popular choice for many gardeners.

Geraniums - Geraniums are a firm favourite for gardeners and with good reason; they bring colour to any garden. Geraniums can be planted in January and they last well throughout the winter months.

Basil - If you’re interested in growing herbs, you’ll need to plant basil in January. If you do, it’ll be ready to harvest between May and October. This means that you’ll have a tonne of basil to use throughout the warmer months.

Sweet Peas - Sweet peas should be planted in an unheated greenhouse or a cold frame, so they’re not ideal if you don’t have the right resources. However, by flowering from May to August, sweet peas a great way to brighten up any spring and summer garden.

Petunias - If you know anything about gardening, you’ll know that petunias are popular flowers to plant in January. By planting in January, they will be ready to flower by June and will last until September. Petunias are bright, colourful and fun.

There’s a great deal of choice when it comes to planting flowers and plants in January, which means that you won’t be limited in any way. Regardless of what you choose, you’re sure to have a fabulous garden to show off by the time spring rolls around.
